Time to watch The Guard.

Don fucking Cheadle.
On Monday, April 25, 2011 myself and Joshua Richey, my friend and this site’s co-contributor and editor, arrived in New York City to attend the Tribeca Film Festival. As this was our first time in New York and first time…
Today at Tribeca Joshua and I watched 2 movies. The first was Trollhunter, a “found footage” movie from Norway about, well, a troll hunter. It was pretty good with really great special effects. I’d liken it to more of a Cloverfield and less of a Blair Witch Project, but with a lot more humor than either (which seemed even funnier to the Norwegian press guy we had sitting behind us).

The next film was The Guard, the poster of which I’ve displayed above. Really, the only reason we decided to see this movie was because Don Cheadle was in it and we needed a movie to see after Trollhunter. What we got, however, was the best movie of the fest I’ve seen thus far. Brendan Gleeson does a fantastic job as Gerry Boyle, a morally crooked but good-at-heart police sergeant in Ireland who finds himself in the middle of murder and drug smuggling. This film was hilarious. Almost anytime Gleeson opened his mouth something funny yet offensive would slip out and the audience would burst into laughter. As awful as some of the things said by Sgt. Boyle were, Gleeson played him in such a way that he was still charming. Much credit also has to be placed on the film’s script, which was written by John Michael McDonagh, who also directed. If I had to compare it to another movie, I would say to think Snatch but Irish, a little less action and a few more laugh-out-loud moments.
There are two more films left to see tomorrow, but I’m not sure if they have what it takes to dethrone The Guard at the top of my personal Tribeca list.
